Will’s Thoughts about the Enbridge Northern Gateway Pipeline Project.
Somebody asked me if I was for, or against, the Enbridge Northern Gateway Pipeline Project. That’s like Crazy Lady asking me if a pair of jeans ‘make her butt look big’. I ain’t real sure there is a good response. But, to answer the question, I reckon that I’m against it. Now, don’t get me wrong, I’m all for folks having good paying jobs, but buying a Brooklyn Bridge just ain’t the way to go about it. City folk and Enbridge have a long history of being city smart, but country stupid. In fact, I reckon that Enbridge’s environmental record is a lot like this story about a city couple who moved to the country.
A couple decide to live the ‘country life’. They quit their jobs, sell their condo, move out to the country and buy a hundred acre farm. To earn an income, they decide that they’ll raise chickens. They go to a livestock supply store, buy a hundred chicks, food, equipment, fencing and set about making their fortune. A week later, they’re back at the store, wanting to buy another hundred chicks. The clerk asked how the first hundred were doing. The couple informed him that they were all dead. “Dead!” exclaimed the shocked clerk. “Goodness, what in the world happened?” The couple just shrugged, and the man mumbled, “We’re not real sure. Maybe we planted them too deep, or too far apart…” When asked what went wrong when the devastating Kalamazoo, Michigan oil spill, and last Friday’s oil spill in Wisconsin occurred, Enbridge’s official response was eerily very similar.
Yep, Enbridge has a very well established track record for saying, “Whoops”, then later admitting its errors (after expensive government investigations). But, Enbridge’s admissions always come after catastrophic environmental damage has already occurred. Oh sure, Enbridge always promises to clean up its mess, but every time that it has had to, Enbridge has done it with all the thoroughness and enthusiasm of a teenager told to clean their bedroom. Then, to add insult to injury, the federal and Alberta governments want to pay B.C. less than a $5.00 hooker to let them have their way with us. I reckon that’s a pretty good indication of just how much respect they have for British Columbians.
I, for one, thinks that it’s economic insanity to risk the destruction of several key B.C. economic engines, such as fishing, farming and ranching, a fragile environment and terrible harm and disrespect to First Nations, just to extract the last few drops of a toxic resource that’ll be entirely depleted worldwide well within the century anyway. But at the end of the day, as westerners squabble, a national energy strategy will lead to a vote on a National Energy Transportation Corridor. Eastern Canadians are sure to pass it, allowing the federal government to expropriate any land that it needs to sell off, and ship away, Canada’s national resources. And, once the federal government controls an energy corridor, no province or territory will get anywhere near the dollars that they expected. Yep, I reckon that when all things get considered, if mega pipeline projects in B.C. like the Enbridge Northern Gateway Pipeline Project get approved, it’ll prove to the world that urban Canadians may be right city smart, but they are 100% country stupid!
Will’s thoughts prove that everybody has opinions, but he has way more than he should. From dogs that won’t stop barking, to the antics of his spouse, ‘Crazy Lady’, Will’s Thoughts will make you smile.
